Synthesegas bevat voornamelijk waterstof en koolmonoxide en ontstaat door biomassa met zuurstof te vergassen. Na reiniging valt dit synthesegas op te waarderen tot synthetisch aardgas, ofwel Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG). Auto's die al geschikt zijn om op gas te rijden kunnen ook SNG gebruiken.
